The William. S. Hart Union High School District will offer the first in a series of drug-awareness seminars for parents and students at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the multipurpose room at Valencia High School.

The seminar is part of the district's Comprehensive Alcohol and Drug Reduction and Education program dealing with substance-abuse issues and the effects on the school community and families.

Tuesday's program will cover common drugs found in the local area and their effects on the human body, how parents can assist students in resisting peer influences regarding drug and alcohol use and what parents should look for when drug and alcohol use is suspected.

Families who attend the seminar also will receive information on the program's voluntary random drug-testing component and how to enroll.

The district is enrolling families to take part in the pilot testing program, expected to begin in the spring.
