Ferry needs to address his multiple absences

I spoke at the last City Council meeting about the latest outburst by Councilman Frank Ferry.

As noted in The Signal article, Mr. Ferry was absent from the meeting. I have noticed his absence from other meetings and decided to look into this further.

City records indicate that for all meetings held in 2013 YTD, Mr. Ferry has been absent from seven of them, missing 35 percent of all council meetings.

Of the meetings where he did show up, Mr. Ferry was late to almost half of them.

All other council members have perfect or near perfect attendance records, with no one missing more than one meeting.

Mr. Ferry’s actions over the years show a lack of respect for the citizens. However, his attendance record shows a lack of respect for the position itself.

With the exception of Councilman TimBen Boydston, our council people are compensated $2,849.15 per month for their service (this includes over $1,000 in health benefits or cash in lieu of benefits).

Based on 21 meetings held in 2012, this averages out to $1,628 per meeting.

I do not want to minimize the commitment involved in serving on the City Council. I understand that many of our council people do additional work in the community, attend city events and interact with constituents.

For this additional work, they are not compensated, as it is considered part of the position.

However, if we are going to pay someone our tax money for doing a job, we should expect them to commit to doing the job.

I hope that Councilman Ferry shows up at the next meeting and addresses this issue.
