A man suspected of having snatched a cell phone and iPad from the Hyatt Regency Valencia hotel Monday morning was followed and arrested by sheriff’s deputies a block away within a couple of minutes, said Sgt. Gary Miller of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“We arrested one man,” he said. “And, once we brought him into custody, we had to take him back out and have him show us where he ditched the (stolen) stuff.”

Shortly after 8:30 a.m. Monday, a spokeswoman at the hotel on Town Center Drive placed a 9-1-1 call to the sheriff’s station to report the theft of an iPad and cell phone, said hotel General Manager Barry Prescott.

“He was at the back of the Hyatt standing by our audio-visual equipment, acting strange,” Prescott said, describing the suspect as a “pretty big” guy in his late teens or early 20s.

“He grabbed an iPad and a cell phone and started running,” Prescott said.

A hotel security officer alerted a woman at the front desk to call 9-1-1, then followed the man southbound on McBean Parkway.

Deputies tracked the suspect to a parking lot on the southeast corner of McBean and Valencia Boulevard, near the Corner Bakery Cafe restaurant, then east along the strip mall, Miller confirmed.

A cook at the Pei Wei Asian Diner said he saw deputies handcuff a man in the parking lot in front of Pei Wei.

“We got back our (stolen) stuff,” Prescott said.

The suspect remains in custody on suspicion of committing grand theft, Miller said.
