Cards were shuffled and poker chips stacked during the second Poker Tournament and Casino Night benefitting the Ricky Slocum Memorial Fund Saturday night at Robinson Ranch Golf Club in Canyon Country.

More than 70 supporters played across seven poker tables, with an initial buy-in cost of $100, and enjoyed a buffet.

The memorial is organized by Bob and Kay Slocum, parents of United States Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Richard “Ricky” P. Slocum who died in 2004 while serving in Iraq.

“We’re keeping his memory alive by doing this fundraiser to support the veterans in this community of Santa Clarita Valley,” said Tracy Klehn, who attend NorthPark Community Church with the Slocums. “There really is no greater love than being willing to fight for your country and to be willing to lay it all down like Ricky did.”

The funds raised during the event will go toward the Ricky Slocum Memorial Fund, which financially assists veterans and military families in the Santa Clarita Valley.

“There are a lot of veterans that are coming back and having a hard time getting their feet planted,” Bob Slocum said. “And we’re here to help them in any way we can financially.”

“We wanted to come up with something that would keep (Ricky’s) legacy alive, as well as help other people,” he continued.

The event also include a raffle, with 100 prizes available for attendees.

Last year’s inaugural event raised more than $6,000, and the Slocum family hopes to continue this event next year.
