Valencia graduate Max Homa is continuing his quest for a spot on the professional golf Tour this week.

He birdied five holes and bogeyed two on his way to a 3-under 69 in the opening round of the second stage of Qualifying School on Tuesday at Deerwood Golf Club in Kingwood, Texas.

That puts Homa tied for third place in a 79-player field after one of four rounds.

This is the second of three stages of Q-School, which is a tournament that determines a select group of players who will earn their Tour cards for the 2014 season.

The Tour is the PGA’s developmental circuit akin to baseball’s minor leagues.

Last month, Homa finished with a four-round score of 11-under to earn medalist honors during the first stage of Q-School in Pinehurst, N.C.

He easily moved on to the second stage, which began Tuesday and will run through Friday for Homa.

Of the 79 players participating this week, a certain number will qualify for the Q-School finals beginning Dec. 12 in La Quinta.

The number of qualifiers will be announced later this week.

For his second round, Homa has a 10th tee start at 8:35 a.m. Central Standard Time today.
