SANTA CLARITA - Members of Temple Beth Ami have organized a fundraiser Sunday for those who don’t mind getting down and dirty to help victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

Temple members already had a mud run scheduled in Acton on Saturday. So they decided to extend the event another day and invite the public to join in a second mud run Sunday.

The entry fee is $50 per runner, and all proceeds will be used to provide food and water to victims of the hurricane, an organizer said.

The mud run will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 3840 Crown Valley Road in Acton. For more information, call 661-255-6410.

Meanwhile, the death toll from the typhoon rose to 2,357 on Wednesday, according a national tally. That figure is expected to rise, perhaps significantly, when accurate information is collected from the whole disaster zone, which spreads over a wide swath of the eastern and central Philippines but appears to be concentrated on two main islands — Leyte and Samar.

Gegham Petrosyan of the International Committee of the Red Cross said destruction along the south cost of Samar island had been “massive” since the giant storm hit on Friday.

“People are desperate for life-saving aid,” Petrosyan said. “However, logistical and security constraints continue to hamper the distribution of desperately needed relief.”

In Tacloban, C-130 transport planes made the first nighttime flights into the city since Haiyan hit, bringing aid to thousands who lost everything in the storm.
