There were a couple of clutch points on Thursday in Golden Valley sophomore Elisa Pierre’s day that led her to advancing to the WSCGA Foundation Tournament/Southern California championship.

There was hole 17, when she birdied after back-to-back bogeys.

And a 12-foot par putt on No. 6 with an extreme downhill slope with a huge break that she sank.

Pierre shot a 1-over 73 on Thursday at the CIF-Southern Section Individual Championship and WSCGA Qualifier at Talega Golf Club in San Clemente.

The cut was at 75.

The 15-year-old recovered quickly after being 2-over after three holes.

“It’s time to pick it up and start concentrating. Not think about what the score or cut would be,” Pierre said she was thinking after the bogeys on Nos. 15 and 16 (her round started on No. 14). “I took a step back from that and thought, ‘You need to focus on your plan. What are you going to do on your next shot to put yourself in the best position.”

Pierre’s calm and smarts is no surprise, as she has been in big pressure situations on the junior golf circuit.

The reigning Foothill League Most Valuable Player made it to the Southern Section championship last year, but shot an 83 and missed the cut by three strokes.

Pierre said she never panicked on Thursday, even facing an intimidating putt on No. 6.

“You’re not having a bad day. You can recover,” she thought. “I saved par after being in a terrible position.”

The top individual score on the day was 66 by Mission Viejo’s Brittany Farrell.

The top 28 golfers, not including girls who qualified from team competition (which also took place on Thursday at the same course), advanced.

Pierre is playing the next round smartly.

She said she has no goals in mind, not wanting to put pressure on herself and not trying to set forth expectations that could possibly disappoint her.

However, she is one round away from making the individual state championship at Quail Lodge in Carmel.

The WSCGA Foundation Tournament/Southern California championship will take place Nov. 14 at The Golf Club at Rancho California in Murrieta.

Pierre has never played the course.
