The William S. Hart Union High School District recently applied for and was awarded a U.S. Department of Education/Homeland Security REMS Grant that has enabled them to expand their disaster preparedness plans for the district.

One new addition is the new mobile command post which will make its debut at the city of Santa Clarita's Emergency Expo today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at College of the Canyons.

The command post is a 33-foot tri-axle tow trailer that the district converted into a fully equipped emergency vehicle.

The command post will operate as an independent office that can be moved to an emergency site, receive status updates on each school site and communicate with first responders if normal communication systems are down.

The command post will be available for all first responders including the Red Cross, Fire Department, FEMA, Sherriff's Department, city officials and volunteer ham radio personnel.
