Hey, do-gooders - don’t make me feel old

I was recently thinking that people, at least in Santa Clarita, are getting much more polite and courteous than they used to be.

I realized this because lately I am often getting help from complete strangers without asking for it.

For example, the other day while I was in the supermarket I happened to drop an item out of my basket, and a young lady quickly said, “Let me get that for you.” And she did.

On another occasion, I was in a parking lot loading some things into the back of my car and a young man came over and said, “Let me help you with that.” And he did.

I was just thinking how great it was to see that people are getting so much nicer when a horrible reality struck me.

Perhaps people haven’t changed at all. It is I who have changed.

Even though I feel just fine, I suspect in my senior years I must appear old and feeble, and that’s the reason for the help.

Well, let me tell all the do-gooders that I am capable and don’t need to be made to feel old by your good deeds.

You’re not helping my spirits.

Leave me alone. Go help some really, really old guy.
