Student council members at Leona Cox Elementary School got some tips on leadership from the big kids down the street when Canyon High School ASB members visited their school on Friday.

The Canyon Country elementary school invited the high school students to its first Leadership Day so that they could teach the younger leaders about the responsibilities that go with leadership and the opportunities that are available to serve as leaders throughout their education.

After meeting together to discuss leadership roles, the two groups of students participated in another important leadership activity - a community service project - by planting flowers on the elementary school campus.

"We're here to bond with the student council leaders and to help be role models for them," said Canyon freshman Ryan Singer. "This project is to show teamwork by planting flowers together, and to set an example of community service."

Leona Cox Principal Laura Banda hopes to make Leadership Day a yearly event.

Leona Cox fifth grader and student council secretary Amy Sterling said she learned that being a leader in high school is not that different from being a leader at her school. She plans to get involved when she eventually attends Canyon High.
