A A A

Builders can learn a lot from the results of the 2013 Solar Decathlon recently held at the Great Park in Irvine, California.

All of the top three winners, plus the People’s Choice award winner, were designs that have many aspects of mid-century California/Los Angeles modern style architecture.

The Box style post and beam designs of the Czech Republic Technical University AIR House, Austria Vienna University of Technology LISI, and University of North Carolina at Charlotte all exemplified the modern look and feel of a modern house with an open floor plan.

Editor’s Note: Schmidt is a member of the Castaic Lions Club and holds the office of Secretary. He visited the solar decathlon out of interest based on his educational and professional background.
