SANTA CLARITA - A 19-year-old man arrested last month for allegedly spray-painting sexually explicit graffiti on at least three vehicles and one Valencia home has pleaded not guilty to three felony counts and three misdemeanor counts of vandalism.

Jake Heffernan of Valencia appeared Wednesday in San Fernando Superior Court, where he entered a plea of not guilty to the charges filed against him, said Shiara Dávila-Morales, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

On Oct. 16, Santa Clarita Valley sheriff’s deputies arrested Heffernan on suspicion of vandalism resulting in more than $400 in damages.

Prosecutors allege Heffernan defaced a Mercedes E350 car, a Ford pickup truck and a Chevrolet Suburban SUV all belonging to the same family and, in each case, causing more than $400 damage, according to the criminal complaint they filed.

They also say Heffernan defaced the wall of a house, an electrical box and a utility box owned by the city of Santa Clarita, according to the complaint.

According to one resident of North Park, a Valencia community in the area east of McBean Parkway and south of Copper Hill Drive, the graffiti was painted with black spray paint and was discovered the morning of Oct. 6.

“The vandalism was very graphic,” she said, describing it as sexual words and pictures.

Heffernan’s next court appearance has been scheduled for Jan. 14, 2014.
