SANTA CLARITA - A woman allegedly punched a sheriff’s deputy in the face during a traffic stop Thursday and was pepper-sprayed before fleeing in her car down Interstate 5 and finally being arrested at gunpoint in Castaic, officials said.

The pursuing deputy told dispatchers he was concerned the woman couldn’t see due to the pepper spray as she reached speeds of 60 mph southbound on I-5. She was stopped about 11 a.m. at Lake Hughes Road, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Lt. Mark Hershey said.

The deputy stopped the driver shortly before 10:45 a.m. Thursday on the southbound freeway just south of Templin Highway. She was driving a silver-colored Honda Accord, according to early reports from a deputy to the dispatcher.

The deputy notified fellow deputies that the woman had been pepper-sprayed and that she had punched him before getting back into her car.

The deputy then updated his position for the dispatcher, reporting the woman was traveling about 60 mph and swerving across southbound lanes of the freeway.

He said he suspected the woman had difficulty seeing, having been pepper-sprayed, and that he was concerned for the safety of other motorists.

The suspect left the freeway at Lake Hughes Road and pulled into a gas station parking lot.

The deputy followed, then reported that he was arresting the woman at gunpoint on suspicion she resisted arrest. The manager of the Mobil gas station on The Old Road at Lake Hughes Road confirmed the arrest.

A sheriff’s search done on the licence plates of the woman’s car revealed the car was registered to a driver in Bakersfield.
