Bicyclists must obey rules of the road, too

Regarding the Nov. 5 letter to the editor titled “Placing blame on bicyclist outrageous”:

This incident is very close to what nearly happened to me about a month ago.

I was traveling west on Valencia Boulevard stopped at a red light, preparing to turn right onto Magic Mountain Parkway. After pedestrians had cleared the crosswalk I started my turn when an adult riding fast came from the sidewalk, entering the crosswalk, riding east.

Fortunately, my quick response saved him from running into me. But bicyclists, like drivers, are expected to obey the rules of the road.

Quote from California Driver Handbook

Bicyclists:

  •  Are entitled to share the road with motor vehicles.
  •  Have the same rights and responsibilities as motor vehicles.
  •  Must obey all traffic signals and stop signs.
  •  Must ride in the same direction as other traffic, not against it.

Adults are not supposed to ride on sidewalks and bicycles are supposed to be walked across crosswalks.

One of the unwritten “rights” is the right to receive citations for traffic violations.

Why isn’t that being done in Santa Clarita?

While the loss of any life is tragic, my sympathies lie with the truck driver who will have to live with the memories of this incident the rest of his life.
