After last week’s surprising win for Hart girls volleyball, an automatic playoff spot was all but assured.

On Tuesday, Hart made it official with a 3-0 win over Canyon by scores of 25-13, 25-18 and 25-15 on Tuesday at Canyon High.
That puts Hart at 15-11 overall, 6-4 in the Foothill League. That’s good for a third-place finish and the league’s final autobid to the CIF-Southern Section Division IA playoffs.

The Indians helped themselves by upsetting eventual league champion Valencia 3-2 on Thursday.

That ended up being Valencia’s only league loss of the year.

“We were tied for third and had a potential at-large bid so that was an issue and beating Valencia was huge and gave the girls confidence to close the season with a strong win,” said Hart head coach Mary Keen.

As for Tuesday’s match against Canyon, Hart got five kills apiece from Corrine Holloway, Ashley Aponik, Amy McKee, Claire Cansler and Chase Tengberg.

Canyon finishes fifth place in league at 3-20 overall, 2-8 in Foothill play.

Saugus 3, Golden Valley 0

Montana Shephard had seven kills, Jennifer Mason added six kills, and Saugus swept Golden Valley by scores of 25-12, 25-13 and 25-21 on Tuesday.

Saugus finishes the year 15-16 overall, 5-5 in league and fourth place.

The team will apply for an at-large bid into the playoffs, according to head coach Eric Luckenbach.

“There’s definitely a story to tell with the appeal,” Luckenbach said. “Usually if you finish .500 in league and you have a quality win, that gets you into playoffs.”

In Tuesday’s match, Golden Valley wrapped up a 1-14 season and ended up 0-10 in league play.

On senior night, 5-foot-2 senior libero Mariah Matteson was subbed in as an outside hitter, where she landed a match-high 10 kills to go with 10 digs.

Juliet Gunn added five digs and two kills for Golden Valley in the season finale.

Julianna Dole added 22 digs for Saugus.
