Tough end to season for Saugus tennis

Saugus girls tennis took a step in the right direction this season.

And after losing 17-1 in the wild-card round of the CIF-Southern Section Division II playoffs on Tuesday to Santa Monica High on the road, the Centurions can reflect on that.

Under first-year head coach Ken Jeffris, Saugus (11-7) made its second postseason appearance in a row.

Next year, Saugus should have a slew of experience, with its top two singles players and underclassmen Carlie Ozaki and Megan Cho, who ended the season with the same exact overall records, expected to return.

“I think we’re going to be very good in the future,” Jeffris said.

Both players didn’t have much luck on Tuesday as both were swept, as was the entire Saugus singles lineup.

The only win was earned by the senior doubles team of Caren Rosen and Rachel Callas, who won the final set of their high school careers 6-4.

“We did very well,” Jeffris said. “Won all our preseason matches against teams we should beat. In league we beat the teams we thought we should beat, and the big three (Hart, Valencia and West Ranch) beat us. Then we got outmatched in the playoffs. But we accomplished what we set out to do.”
