When it comes to the postseason, West Ranch girls tennis is going to lean on the same players that got it to this point.

In Tuesday’s CIF-Southern Section Division II wild-card match, it was precisely those athletes that got the job done.

The West Ranch Wildcats beat the Crescenta Valley Falcons 10-8 at Crescenta Valley High behind strong performances at the top of the lineup.

No. 1 singles player and Wildcats freshman Quinterra Walter-Eze completed a perfect day by sweeping all three of her sets by 6-0 scores.

That paved the way for West Ranch (10-6) winning seven of nine singles sets. It was a similar formula for the Wildcats’ 11-7 win over the same Falcons team earlier this season on Sept. 6.

“We had played them before and (Walter-Eze) did the same thing, so I expected that from her,” said West Ranch head coach Eric Spiecker.

At the No. 2 singles spot for West Ranch, Julia Lynch added three more wins by scores of 6-1, 6-1, 6-3.

And in a key set in the final matchup of the day, West Ranch’s Hannah Yooster won a set 6-0 for the 10th and clinching win.

“If we hadn’t won that, we would be counting games right now,” Spiecker said, alluding to the tiebreaking procedure if the match would have finished 9-9 in sets.

In addition to the seven wins in singles, the Wildcats also snagged three wins from its No. 1 pairing of Sydney Schwartz and MacKenzie Lyle, who won 6-4, 6-2, 6-3.

One of those wins came against Crescenta Valley’s Alexa Gregorian and Jackie Dilanchyan, who won the Pacific League doubles championship last week.

As a team, the Falcons (9-6) finished third in their league. West Ranch also finished third in the Foothill League.

Now, the Wildcats move on to the first round where they’ll play today at Beverly Hills (9-2), the Ocean League champions.

“We’re going to have to have really strong performances from those (same players) to be honest,” Spiecker said of the upcoming match.
