Santa Clarita will play host to the 2014 Amgen Tour of California next year and will, for the first time, be the location for two starts to the race, officials announced Tuesday.

However, Santa Clarita will not host a race stage ending, which is generally considered more desirable because it tends to generate more revenue for the host city.

The ninth annual Tour of California, which some regard as the nation’s top bicycle race, starts May 11, 2014, in Sacramento and ends May 18 in Thousand Oaks, with eight legs to be ridden in the process.

Santa Clarita will be the start for two of those legs: Stage 6 on May 16 and Stage 7 on May 17.

Stage 5 ends in Santa Barbara and Stage 6 ends in Mountain High.

“Santa Clarita is thrilled to once again be chosen as a host city for the Amgen Tour of California,” Mayor Bob Kellar said in a statement. “Having hosted the race five previous times, we know first-hand what a thrilling and first-class event the race is.”

Hosting the race generally delights local bicycle enthusiasts who participate in pre-race events and celebrations and sometimes line roads to see the contest.

But local drivers often grumble about the inconveniences of having roads in the area closed.
