The Hart School District recently applied for and was awarded a U.S. Department of Education/Homeland Security REMS Grant that has enabled them to expand their disaster preparedness plans for the district.

One new addition is the new mobile command post which will make its debut at the City of Santa Clarita's Emergency Expo, Saturday, March 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at College of the Canyons.

The Command Post is a 33-foot tri-axle toy trailer that the district converted into a fully equipped emergency vehicle. It houses a complete communications system, TV, wireless computers, printer and fax, maps with aerial view of schools, medical supplies, food, water and a status board to record emergency events as they occur.

In the event of an earthquake, terrorist threat, fire storm, floods, mass evacuations, etc. the mobile command post is ready and available to operate as an independent office that can be moved to the emergency site.

If communication systems are down the command post can still function and will be able to receive up to date status on each school site, as well as, communicating with first responders.

The command post will also be available for all first responders to use such as the Red Cross, Fire Department, FEMA, Sherriff's Department, city officials, volunteer Ham Radio personnel, etc.

During evacuation events the Red Cross has already placed Red Cross Emergency bins on key high school campuses so that cots, blankets, and emergency supplies are immediately available, in addition to the fully equipped school emergency bins.

Staff training will is also available through this grant. Some of the areas of training will include CERT Emergency Response training, CPR, NIMS/SEMS, Ham Radio Certification, START, and bio-emergency/infectious disease.
