SCCS football just short again

It was a tough night on the road for the Santa Clarita Christian Cardinals, who were upended 20-6 by Saddleback Valley Christian of San Juan Capistrano on Friday in a San Joaquin League matchup at St. Margarets High in San Juan Capistrano.

The turning point came early in the fourth quarter as SCCS (4-5, 2-1), down by a touchdown, had the Warriors (7-2, 3-0) pinned down inside their own 20-yard line on third-and-15 and sacked the quarterback for a loss. Yet, the Cardinals were whistled for a personal foul, and SVC was able to hold on.

“It’s tough for a small school like ours to go on the road in that situation and win a game against a team like Saddleback Valley Christian,” said SCCS head coach Garrick Moss. “Our guys fought hard and gave it their best.”

The Cards’ lone score came on a 50-yard touchdown pass from Jonathan Saavedra to DJ King in the third quarter. Saavedra finished the night 14-of-20 for 167 yards and no interceptions.

SCCS will play its regular-season finale Thursday at Southlands Christian.
