On Saturday, Oct. 26, the Valencia High School Theatre Arts students won First Place in Musical Theatre, and First Place in Large Group Drama, at the Drama Teachers Association of Southern California – DTASC - Fall Festival.

Additionally, they won Top Five in the All Female Cast category.

The DTASC is a non-profit theatre organization that has up to 80 schools participating from the entire Southern California area and as many as 2,000 students participating.

Taking First Place at DTASC is the equivalent of winning C.I.F. in sports in the Southern California area. The competition is incredibly fierce and theatre kids from all over take this festival very seriously.

The DTASC is the largest theatre competition of its kind in the United States, he said.

This is our 10th year participating and this is only our second time winning first place in two categories. We’re very excited and winning at this level is a really big deal to my students and I.

Valencia High School Theatre Arts won the musical category with songs and scenes from “Fiddler on the Roof” with senior Mark Gofman playing the role of Tevya.

For the Large Group Drama they performed scenes from Arthur Miller’s “A View from the Bridge” with juniors Matthew Voltz and Melissa Manning in the lead roles.

The school’s theater group is presenting their musical presentation of “Fiddler on the Roof” at Salute to the Winners on Monday, Nov. 18.

The theater group will perform at the Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro.
