SANTA CLARITA - West Ranch High School took home top honors at the 30th annual Hart Rampage marching band tournament, but other Santa Clarita Valley schools also scored highly in the competition held last weekend in Cougar Stadium at College of the Canyons.

For the fifth time in six years the marching band at West Ranch took home the sweepstakes trophy as the top-scoring band at Saturday’s competition, according to Jason Marshall, the school’s director of instrumental music.

“For my students, besides championships, Rampage is the biggest show for them during the year,” Marshall said Wednesday. “They look forward to it and they’re excited about it.”

Schools competing at Rampage are scored on a variety of aspects, including the performance of their color guard, visual allure of their show and the overall play of the band.

Competing bands are split into divisions. Canyon High School is in Division 2A. Golden Valley, Saugus and Valencia high schools are in Division 3A and West Ranch is in Division 5A.

Hart High School does not compete for trophies at Rampage because it is the host school for the competition.
Along with the overall sweepstakes trophy, West Ranch placed first in the color guard category for Division 5A and also won all caption awards, according to Marshall.

Valencia and Saugus placed first and second, respectively, in both the band and color guard categories in Division 3A. The two schools also placed second and third for percussion in Division 3A, while Golden Valley placed fourth.

Golden Valley also placed fourth in the band category and third in color guard for Division 3A.

Canyon came out on top in the Red Band category and placed third in the color guard category for Division 2A.
