Several local advertising agencies took home recognition with plaques to display their achievement at the 2009 ADDY Awards for North Los Angeles County Sunday.

Twenty-five companies submitted 89 entries for consideration in the ADDYs, hosted by the Advertising Professionals Association of North Los Angeles, AdPros.

"Each winner here tonight is clearly capable of communicating a company's unique benefits by combining striking visual images with compelling copy that captures attention, inspires imagination, sustains customer loyalty and sells," said ADDY Awards Chair Will Sherwood, of The Sherwood Group.

Judges evaluated entries according to American Advertising Federation criteria.

"I was impressed with the diversity in the type of entrants and the type of businesses represented," said Diana Crews, one of three judges. "The best ones really understood their client and how to present that client."

Three local companies received all three Special Judges awards: Mellady Direct Marketing, Stacey Hauge Printing Co., Inc. and LL2Design. Sandia Ennis, of Sandia's Web & Design, was awarded the Silver Medal for outstanding contributions to advertising and serving the community. The top two awards went to Burbank's John Kelly Photography for Best Art Direction and the city of San Fernando for Best of Show.

Jeff Courtney of Mellady Direct Marketing, Vertical Marketing and Selling Points Design, said receiving an ADDY award helps create a higher profile for business.

"Clients love the recognition and validation among peers," he said.

Sherwood, whose own company won multiple Awards of Excellence, agreed the awards go beyond short-term confirmation.

"It's nice to get credit to win an award but its more about establishing credibility in the community and establishing that (clients) are getting good work," Sherwood said.

Other local award winners included: Studio M Creative, Selling Points Design, Stacey Hauge Printing Co., Prime Publications, Watters Edge Design, eSolutions, Power Media Group, Inc., and Point of View Communications.
