SANTA CLARITA - Junior Girl Scout Troop 1392 and Cadette Girl Scout Troop 7392 are hosting an annual 1K Kiddie Run Sunday to help raise money and awareness for the SCV Food Pantry.

This is their third year hosting the event, and they are hoping it will be even more successful than last year with community support.

Troop 7392 leaders Kim Rice-Bogdan and Cari Wright helped their girls create this annual event as their Silver Award in scouting.

“The culminating project in the Silver Award process requires an event that will benefit the community and be sustainable.

Each year the girls will have individually spent more than 50 hours benefiting the homeless in Santa Clarita Valley,” said Rice-Bogdan.

“I love this event,” said Allison Hall from Troop 7392, who helped her troop for the past few years. “It’s so fun to see the kids cross the finish line so excited!”

“No one should go hungry, so that is why I’m looking forward to helping,” said newcomer Melissa Van Dyke from Troop 1392.

The race will be held Sunday at Newhall Park on the corner of Newhall Avenue and Dalby Drive. The Kiddie Run begins at 7:45 a.m., and on-site registration opens at 7 a.m.

The entry fee is $10 and includes refreshments and a participation medal.

The race is open to all ages. Following the 1K Kiddie Run, the Food Pantry will host its 20th annual 5K Run/Walk Against Hunger at 8 a.m.

This is the major fundraiser for the SCV Food Pantry and helps to provide the resources to furnish supplemental food to more than 60 families daily.

Anyone who brings three canned food items to the event will receive a door prize coupon. Registration information and race fees can be found on the SCV Food Pantry website at www.scvfoodpantry.org.

The race is sanctioned by the Southern California Track and Field Association.
