AT&T Champions Classic: Forsman wins in a playoff

Playoff drama continued at the 2009 edition of the AT&T Champions Classic at Valencia Country Club.

For the third straight year, the tournament was decided in a playoff, with Dan Forsman prevailing on the first playoff hole over Don Pooley. Both players finished the 54-hole event knotted at 11-under-par, 205.

Playing the par-5 18th as the playoff hole, both players had short chip shots up to the back left pin placement. Forsman, putting first, drained his 9-foot putt for birdie, while Pooley's 5-footer to match him hit the edge of the cup and jumped out.

"I thought Pooley was going to make his putt in the playoff, so I knew I had to make mine," said Forsman, who joined the Champions Tour last year. "I hit my putt with perfect speed. To win on the Champions Tour was a huge bonus. You always wonder how your nerves are going to hold up."

A five-time winner on the PGA Tour, this is Forsman's first win on the Champions Tour. His first win on the PGA Tour came in 1985 and his last win was in 2002.

Last year, Denis Watson beat Loren Roberts and Brad Bryant in a playoff, and in 2007, Tom Purtzer defeated Roberts in a playoff that lasted four holes.

Rounding out the top 5 were Jay Haas in third, one stroke back at 10-under-par, while Fulton Allem, Ben Crenshaw and Joey Sindelar finished in a tie for fourth at 9-under-par.
