This is a very difficult, painful commentary to write, but the angst I feel is nothing compared to the loss for parents of Jamiel Shaw Jr.: Jamiel Shaw Sr. and Jamiel's mom, Army Sgt. Anita Shaw, who has returned from her second combat tour in Iraq to bury her son and mourn his passing. Words just don't make it here.

This beautiful child, 17, aspiring football star from Los Angeles High School on his way to Stanford, Rutgers or another comparable school, is gunned down three doors from his home on Fifth Street in Los Angeles. He wasn't a gang member. He was just a kid in the wrong place at the wrong time who didn't give the right answer to a domestic terrorist whom police identify as 18th Street gangbanger Pedro Espinoza, 19.

If this were a stand-alone story, I could almost stomach this tragedy and offer support to the grieving family. Unfortunately, the event that extinguished Jamiel Shaw Jr.'s life is all too common.

The victims are almost always innocent citizens who are subjected to the criminal illegal alien population that operates with near impunity in sanctuary cities like Los Angeles.

Incompetent Mayor Anthony Villaraigosa and the inept Los Angeles City Council fail to protect the city's citizens. This creature Espinoza, a career offender, had been locked up on a six-month illegal handgun sentence.

Through good behavior (what a joke!), Espinoza was out of jail in four months. Within 28 hours of his release, he allegedly took the life (and dreams) of Jamiel Shaw Jr. How and why does this happen?
The real tragedy is that there was an immigration hold on suspect Espinoza.

He is an illegal alien and was to be turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for deportation to Mexico.

Unfortunately, bureaucracy is alive and well in the city and the county of Los Angeles. The people who are supposed to protect us let Espinoza out, and he murders (again, allegedly) Jamiel Jr.

Did you know every day, 12 Americans are murdered by illegal aliens?

Did you also know 13 Americans are killed by illegal alien drunk drivers?

Another eight American children are assaulted by illegal aliens every day. That projects to about 3,000 children sexually victimized by illegal aliens.

In 2006, almost 10,000 Americans were murdered or slaughtered by people who should not have been in the United States. These statistics were provided by U.S. Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa. As the number of illegal aliens increases, so does the number of American victims.

When you compare these sobering statistics with casualties in Iraq, it doesn't compare. The 4,000 Americans who sacrificed their lives in Iraq (plus an additional 500 Americans in Afghanistan), pales against the 21,900 Americans murdered and another 23,725 killed by illegal alien drunk drivers since Sept. 11, 2001, according to King.

This is why I call Jamiel Shaw Jr. a victim of domestic terrorism.

Compounding this already enormous and growing problem is the adamant stand by more than 30 American cities offering sanctuary to any illegal that can get across the border. Sanctuary cities have adopted a "don't ask, don't tell" policy, in which they do not require their employees, including law
enforcement officers, to report to federal officials aliens who may be illegally present in the United States.

This attitude is in direct conflict with federal immigration law. And Los Angeles is just such a sanctuary city. Other sanctuary cities in California include Fresno, San Diego and San Francisco, as well as Sonoma County. Both of our U.S. senators, Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein, are sanctuary city supporters.

Representative Dan Burton, R-Ind., has introduced into the House of Representatives HR 3549, the No Sanctuary for Illegals Act. Passage of this bill in Congress, along with a presidential signature, will declare unlawful any city that does not cooperate with federal law. I applaud this measure.

Buck McKeon has already signed on as a sponsor of HR 3549.

An Ohio political action committee, upset by the inaction of Democratic U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown, set up a Web site detailing the seemingly endless list of victims of illegal aliens. It is called the Illegal Aliens Memorial, and you can reach it by going to: www.ojjpac.org/memorial.asp. Be prepared, the list is long: 42 pages.

Here are just a few of the victims and their circumstances:

* Chris Miller, 20, Phoenix, Ariz., parents' only son, killed by illegal alien drunk driver Jacabed Dominguez Torres, who pleaded guilty to manslaughter, in 2007. Torres was driving drunk when he slammed into a car
in which Chris Miller was a passenger. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

* Paul Watry, 17, Port Washington, Wis., killed by illegal alien Eddie Carbajal-Lile, found guilty March 24, 2008. Carbajal-Lile, drunk, drove his vehicle into a vehicle driven by Watry, then fled the scene. Carbajal-Lile, who was living illegally in the United States, had been previously convicted of driving without a license and DUI but was never deported. Two other passengers, 18-year-old Scott Mueller and 18-year-old Jillian Fitzmaurice in Watry's car, were seriously injured. Sentencing is set for May 2008.

* Husband and wife Wayne Hughes, 45, and Michelle Hughes, 48, riding on a motorcycle near Biloxi, Miss., were allegedly run down by drink driver Raymoundo Rojas Garcia in February 2008. The suspect fled the scene. He was arrested, awaits trial and faces 5-25 years for each count.

In these sagas there is one indisputable fact: None of these people would have been victimized if our country did its job and secured its border.

Regrettably Jamiel Shaw Jr. will not be the last victim in this ongoing saga.
