Mike Herrington in national voting

Mike Herrington’s Hart football winning streak is seven games this year.

His USA Today winning streak is at two with the big one now underway.

Herrington is one of eight finalists for USA Today High School Sports’ first-ever Best High School Football Coach in America.

Herrington, now in his 25th season as head football coach at Hart, won the online voting for California and the regional round.

The other finalists are Philip Haywood of Belfry (Ky.), Jim Hightower of St. Thomas More in Lafayette, La., Rick Jones of Greenwood, Ark., Jim Hoover of Walton, N.Y., Kevin Lynott of Middletown, Md., Marcus Boyles of Petal, Miss. and Jeff Van Leur of Bridgewater Emery Ethan in Emery, S.D.

The national round ends on Tuesday at 9 a.m. PDT.

Votes can be cast at contest.usatodayhss.com.

At stake is $2,000 for the winning coach for his athletic department. Second through fifth places also receive cash prizes for the athletic departments: second ($1,000), third ($500), fourth ($250) and fifth ($100). All eight finalists receive banners for their schools.

As of Thursday, Herrington was in seventh place at 3.1 percent.

Haywood was leading at 31.3 percent.
