Max Homa appears to be a shoe-in to advance to the second stage of PGA Qualifying School.

Through three of four rounds in the first stage of Q-School, the Valencia High graduate is tied for third place at 9-under in the field of 77 playing the event at Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C.

The top 32 players plus ties move on to stage two, which will take place next month at one of six possible locations.

Homa’s hot start this week puts him in prime position to move on.

The 22-year-old shot a 4-under 68 in his opening round on Tuesday and followed that with a 66 on Wednesday and a 73 on Thursday. That puts him two strokes behind co-leaders Ethan Tracy and Frank Adams.

Homa is coming off two straight appearances in PGA Tour events in the past two weekends. He finished tied for ninth at the Open in Northern California and tied for 30th at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas. He wrapped up play at the Shriners Open two days before traveling across the country to begin Q-School.

The second stage of Q-School will narrow down a group of players who will play in the final stage in December. From there, a select number of top finishers will be granted membership to the Tour, which is the PGA’s official developmental circuit.
