SANTA CLARITA - A Canyon Country man convicted last year of animal cruelty and dubbed the “Backyard Butcher” has been found guilty of the same offense and sentenced to three years in state prison, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said.

“Defendant Roberto Celedon pleaded no contest today to one felony count of animal cruelty,” said spokeswoman Shiara Dávila-Morales Thursday.

“Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael O’Gara immediately sentenced the defendant to three years in state prison to be served in county jail,” she said.

Last month, Celedon pleaded not guilty to charges of animal slaughter and cruelty a little more than a year after he was sentenced on similar charges.

The recent criminal complaint filed against the iron worker accused him of having “unlawfully, maliciously and intentionally” killed a sheep at his home on Tick Canyon Road.

He was also accused of “slaughtering livestock capable of use as human food,” which is a misdemeanor, according to the same complaint filed Sept. 3.

In a third count filed against Celedon, prosecutors say the 28-year-old killed a sheep without “rending the animal insensible to pain,” also a misdemeanor.

Celedon, however, entered a plea of no contest to one felony count of animal cruelty.

In the previous case, the District Attorney’s office filed a seven-page felony complaint against Celedon in March 2012. He was arrested a month later and accused of unlawfully slaughtering animals for sale over a six-month period. Twenty-nine emaciated farm animals were later removed from his property.

He pleaded guilty to one felony animal cruelty charge and a misdemeanor in May 2012 and was sentenced to 90 days in Los Angeles County jail, five years’ probation and ordered not to possess any animals for slaughter.
