With Valencia girls tennis losing to Hart on Tuesday, the door is open a crack for West Ranch to finish in second place in the Foothill League.

The Wildcats defeated Golden Valley 17-1 on Tuesday at West Ranch High.

West Ranch now plays at Valencia on Thursday in both teams’ Foothill finale.

The Wildcats will have to avenge the 12-6 loss to Valencia from Oct. 9 and best that score to receive the No. 2 overall seed for the CIF-Southern Section playoffs, which would give them a better shot at hosting a first-round playoff match.

“This season could be defined Thursday,” said West Ranch head coach Eric Spiecker.

On Tuesday, Quinterra Walter-Eze swept 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 and Julia Lynch swept 6-0, 6-0, 6-1 for the third-place Wildcats.

MacKenzie Lyle and Sydney Schwartz and Brianna Mears and Jenny Cranert swept on the doubles side for West Ranch (8-5 overall, 6-3 Foothill League).

Saugus 12, Canyon 6

Saugus improved its playoff resume by beating Canyon 12-6 on Tuesday at Saugus High.

Seniors Caren Rosen and Rachel Callas swept on the doubles side 6-4, 6-2, 6-0 for Saugus and senior Diorella Dizon won two sets 6-1, 6-4.

“Yes. Definitely with a win at Golden Valley, it would be a 67 percent winning percentage, which is definitely a strong case for an at-large bid at CIF,” said Saugus head coach Ken Jeffris if he thinks his team should receive a playoff berth.

Saugus (11-6, 3-6) wraps up its regular season at Golden Valley on Thursday.

Katrina DeGuzman swept 6-1, 6-0, 6-0 for Canyon, which wraps its season Thursday against Hart.
