SANTA CLARITA - Coroner’s investigators are waiting for a DNA sample to arrive from Guatemala before they can confirm the identity of a woman whose body was found dumped at the side of San Francisquito Canyon Road six months ago, a coroner’s spokesman said.

In May, investigators with the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Department said they found a man they believe is the woman’s nephew and that they were waiting for dental records to confirm her identity.

Five months later, they’re still waiting for those records and for the chance to confirm the identity of “Jane Doe 23,” aged about 30 years old.

On Aug. 22, they spoke to officials at the Guatemalan consulate in Los Angeles who have been in touch with the woman’s family in Guatemala, Lt. Craig Henry told The Signal.

“We were waiting for DNA via the Guatemalan consulate,” he said. “We have persons who may be the parents who can supply us with DNA.”

On Sept. 25, consulate staff assured investigators that the family was “proceeding” with requests for a DNA sample, he said.
“Via the consulate, we know they’ve (been) in contact with the family,” he said.

Also in May, investigators learned of the existence of dental records for work the woman had done in the United States. They’re hoping to give her a name once they confirm her identity through either DNA or dental records.

“It’s a waiting game,” Henry said.

The woman’s body was found on the side of San Francisquito Canyon Road April 10 by Los Angeles Department of Water and Power workers.

Two weeks into the investigation, Detective Rich Tomlin of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau said autopsy results indicate she does not appear to be the victim of foul play.

An email sent to staff at the consulate Monday was not answered.
