Albert Bigelow: How clean is the bill that ended the shutdown?

How many times did we hear Obama and Senator Harry Reid insist on a “clean” Continuing Resolution to end the shutdown?

We were inundated with words like “extortion” and “held hostage’ when the House passed dozens of bills to end the shutdown but included changes to Obamacare.

Surely it couldn’t be that Obama told Reid not to accept any changes to his pride and joy — the ACA. Now that the budget bill has passed both houses and been signed by the president, we find at least 5 — count ‘em, 5 — earmarks that have no bearing on the budget stalemate!

Among the non-related items in this “clean bill” are the following:

- $2 billion for Olmstead Locks and Dam in Ohio.

- $450 million for Department of Transportation for Colorado road repair.

- $3.1 million for a Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board.

- $174,000 to the widow of F. Lautenberg, who left an estate worth in excess of $100 million.

- Federal workers promised a 1 percent raise and back pay for the two-week layoff.

Now it is clear that a “clean bill” really means the taxpayer got taken to the cleaners for at least $2.5 billion.

Clearly the Republican House erred trying to defund Obamacare. Defunding was never going get to the floor in the Senate. Obama would have vetoed it if it got that far.

Belatedly, the House attempted to just fix some flaws in the ACA, but by that time Obama/Reid were winning in the polls and refused to negotiate.

Now some of the impacts and miscues implementing Obamacare are appearing, and it looks like the Democrats are going to reap the whirlwind.

The ACA is NOT going to produce savings or better health care. On the contrary, costs are rising and doctors declining to accept any insurance.

Now if the young, healthy people do not sign up, costs will explode.
