National Red Ribbon Week kicked off in the Santa Clarita Valley on Friday with a BMX Pros show for students, including a performer jumping his bike over five teachers lying on the playground.

The performers also spoke about maintaining a healthy, drug-free lifestyle during the Red Ribbon Week performance.

The annual observation is part of the National Family Partnership - formerly the National Federation of Parents for Drug Free Youth - effort to keep kids off drugs.

The grassroots nonprofit was formed in 1980 by a handful of parents convinced they should begin to play a leadership role in drug prevention.

Most Santa Clarita Valley schools observe Red Ribbon Week, which runs Monday through Oct. 29 this year.
