Friday was the last day of operations at the post office that had been open in downtown Castaic for the last half-century.

The new location offers 1,000 new P.O. boxes which are accessible all day and has three registers.

The U.S. Postal Service opened a new post office for Castaic residents Monday morning at the regional processing center located at 28201 Franklin Parkway.

The move was also a cost-cutting measure, as the Postal Service owns the new facility, while it had been leasing the property retired last week, said Bob Swanson, postmaster for the Santa Clarita Valley.
