A Palmdale man arrested 15 minutes after an armed robbery at a Newhall bank last May was found guilty of robbery Wednesday, court officials said.

A jury in San Fernando Superior Court deliberated about an hour Wednesday morning before finding 23-year-old Demarie Rashad Mackey guilty of robbery, a court contact said.

Closing arguments were heard in the case Tuesday afternoon. Deputy District Attorney Emily Cole said the key piece of evidence in her case against Mackey was his confession.

Mackey was arrested May 25 by Santa Clarita Valley sheriff’s deputies after a lone male — armed with a small handgun and with his face covered by a stocking — entered the Bank of America branch on Valley Street near Lyons Avenue and stole an undisclosed amount of money, investigators reported.

The suspect then fled the scene.

About 15 minutes later, deputies caught up with the driver of a red Toyota Camry on the northbound Highway 14 freeway north of Sand Canyon Road.

Deputies detained the driver, identified as Mackey, at gunpoint.

No shots were fired and no one was hurt during the incident, according to officials.

Mackey remains in custody at Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic in lieu of $1.1 million bail. He is scheduled to be sentenced next week.
