In a contest between two teams that were clearly evenly matched, the Valencia Vikings won the battle of endurance.

Valencia came from behind to beat the Hart Indians 3-2 by scores of 25-17, 19-25, 20-25, 25-19 and 15-8.

The Vikings (12-3 overall, 4-0 Foothill League) trailed by a game and fell behind 15-12 in the fourth game before snatching the momentum back and running away with a win in game five.

“We were up against it,” said Valencia head coach Ray Sanchez. “That fourth game, it would have been very, very easy to sort of crumble and fall apart and lose that match, and they just didn’t do that.”

Lindsey Knudsen paced the Vikings with 20 kills, and she also added 16 digs. Teammate Makena Lautner tacked on 12 kills and nine digs and Hayley Alvarez tallied 39 assists.

Sanchez also credited the work of seniors Savi Carroll and Jessie Rodriguez, who both provided a significant spark for Valencia when they were subbed in late in the match.

Hart was in control of things through games two, three and the opening portion of four thanks to strong play from Chase Tengberg and Corrine Holloway.

Those two had 13 kills and 12 kills, respectively to lead Hart (11-9, 2-2). Hart’s Claire Cansler added 10 kills and 14 blocks.

Hart hitters made a total of nine errors in the fifth game.

“Mentally and physically, we just ran out of steam in game five and we just made way too many errors,” said Hart head coach Mary Keen.

The win for Valencia sets up a matchup of the two remaining Foothill teams still undefeated in league. Valencia plays at West Ranch in that matchup today at 5:30 p.m.

West Ranch 3, Golden Valley 0

Alexis Clewis had five aces and 13 kills to lead the West Ranch Wildcats to a 3-0 win over Golden Valley by scores of 25-11, 25-14 and 25-22.

The win keeps West Ranch (7-3, 4-0) unbeaten in league play.

Meanwhile, Golden Valley fell to 1-8 overall and 0-4 in league. Golden Valley was led by Denver Spencer’s five kills and two blocks while Mariah Matteson chipped in 11 digs.

For the Wildcats, Brooke Garelick finished with nine digs.

Saugus 3, Canyon 0

Saugus picked up its first Foothill League win of the season with a sweep of the Canyon Cowboys on Tuesday. Saugus is now 12-12 overall, 1-3 in league.

For Canyon (3-15, 1-3), Sayo Akao tallied five kills and three blocks while Hannah Wilken had 17 assists.
