UPDATE: Palmdale: Court of Appeals Clears Way for November Election

A state Court of Appeals has ruled that Palmdale can move ahead with its City Council election in November, despite a ruling that went against the city in Superior Court, the city says.

A Los Angeles Superior Court judge ruled late in September that Palmdale cannot hold its scheduled City Council elections.

The same judge had ruled that Palmdale’s system of at-large elections prevented minority voters from selecting a candidate of their choice.

However, the appellate court decision gives a green light to the election, according to a news release issued by the city Tuesday. The results would be presented to the Court of Appeals, which “is prepared to decide the certification issue on a priority basis,” Palmdale City Attorney Matthew Ditzhazy said in the release.

Lawsuits similar to the one against Palmdale have been filed against the city of Santa Clarita and two local school districts.
