Former Valencia Viking Max Homa announced himself to the PGA Tour in a big way this week.

Playing his first tournament as a professional, Homa finished ninth place with a 72-hole score of 12-under after Sunday’s final round of the Open in San Martin.

That earns him a paycheck of $135,000 and, due to the top 10 finish, an exemption to next week’s Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas.

The former University of California, Berkeley standout ended up five strokes behind winner Jimmy Walker, who shot a 5-under 66 in his final round to get to 17-under overall.

Homa carded rounds of 69, 68, 66 and 69 this week at the CordeValle Golf Club. He hovered in the top 20 early in the tournament and launched into the top 10 on Saturday with his best round of the week.

Prior to this week, the last event Homa played was the Walker Cup, where he helped the U.S. team beat Great Britain and Ireland in the prestigious amateur event. Homa had previously stated that he planned to delay declaring as a pro until after the Walker Cup.
