Republican extremists must stop holding our country hostage

Right-wing extremists in the U.S. House of Representatives have shown little regard for the people who elected them to govern responsibly by endangering the nation’s economic health and remaining steadfast in their attempts to block or defund the Affordable Care Act.

The American people have unwillingly been handed a partial government shutdown, resulting in furloughs, the suspension of vital services and — if it continues — a national default on our debt.

Right-wing members of Congress have gone too far by engineering a government shutdown and holding families’ access to health care hostage in their partisan desire to block or defund the Affordable Care Act — the law of the land.

The Affordable Care Act is working for middle-class families, from young adults who can stay on their parents’ plans until they are 26 years old to millions of seniors getting discounts on prescription drugs.

The House of Representatives’ latest political game is passing piecemeal spending bills that keep select parts of the government open while they consider slashing retirement benefits and more.

Either they get their way or they will keep the government partially shut down and fail to pay our nation’s bills.

What the people of this country need are responsible leaders who will stand up for their constituents and return to governing.

Congress must pass a responsible budget, end the sequester by reinvesting in vital services, ask those who can afford it to pay their fair share, and get Americans back to work in good jobs that support their families.
