Santa Clarita Christian football has played its fair share of tough, physical teams this season, some of them in higher divisions.

The idea was to become battle tested for league play. And that’s exactly what the SCCS Cardinals were on Saturday in a 57-0 blowout of Fairmont Prep High of Anaheim it both teams’ San Joaquin League opener at Yorba Linda High School.

“We got to our team in league when we needed everything to be clicking, and it was,” said SCCS head coach Garrick Moss.

Six different Cardinals scored touchdowns in a game that was controlled by SCCS very early and had a running clock for the entire second half.

For SCCS (3-3 overall, 1-0 San Joaquin), senior running back Derek Lewis ran for 72 yards and two scores on 12 carries.

In the aerial attack, quarterback Jonathan Saavedra finished 17-for-23 passing with 284 yards and three touchdown passes to Jacob Nogle, D.J. King and Jon Luke Wilson.

Jacob Moss also added three catches for 62 yards in the game.

The Cardinals scored three touchdowns within the first eight minutes of the game and led 51-0 at halftime.

“It was nice to come out and jump on them early because it was their homecoming and we were on the road,” Garrick Moss said.

More than anything else though, Moss said he was impressed with his team’s defensive effort against a Fairmont Prep team that came in scoring more than 30 points per game.

One SCCS player who turned in a strong effort on defense was Cameron Lewis, who ran 75 yards for a scoop-and-score touchdown on a Fairmont fumble. Lewis also added a 19-yard scoring run on offense.

Kamron Carroll was the final Cardinals player to score as he found the end zone on one of his seven rushes for 53 yards.

SCCS gets a home game on Saturday against Frazier Mountain before resuming league play against Capistrano Valley on the following Saturday.
