A Palmdale man accused of robbing a Newhall bank and leading police on a short chase last May was scheduled to stand trial later this month during a short court appearance Tuesday.

The trial date for the suspect, 23-year-old Demarie Rashad Mackey, was set for Oct. 15 in San Fernando Superior Court, said Carmen Williams, a spokeswoman with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Mackey remains in custody at Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic in lieu of $1.1 million bail. He pleaded not guilty to the felony robbery charge on May 29.

On May 25, shortly before 10:45 a.m., a lone male — armed with a small handgun with his face covered by a stocking — entered the Bank of America branch on Valley Street near Lyons Avenue and stole an undisclosed amount of money, investigators reported.

The suspect then fled the scene.

About 15 minutes later, deputies caught up with the driver of a red Toyota Camry on the northbound Highway 14 freeway north of Sand Canyon Road.

Deputies detained the driver, identified Mackey, at gunpoint.

No shots were fired and no one was hurt during the incident, according to officials.
