The Valencia Vikings volleyball team came into this season with one goal in mind: to win the CIF championship. The Vikings have won titles in 2003-04 and 2006.

The defending Foothill League champs took another step in the right direction by defeating the Indians in three straight on Thursday, 25-11, 25-14, 25-12.

According to the Vikings head coach Mark Knudsen the team has to continue to work hard and go into every match competitive in order to remain the preeminent team in the league.

"We have to stay motivated and keep working on things in order to get better," Knudsen said. "We have to continue to work hard in order to get better."

The Vikings were led by senior Jamey Ker who had 11 kills and 10 digs.

Also dominating, was Jon Griffith who had 10 kills, while Giovanni Botten led the team in assists with 34 and Derrick Trent added four aces.

Ker, who has already committed to attending UCLA in the fall, is looking forward to ending his high school career with another CIF title.

"We have to remind ourselves that we can't practice bad habits," he said. " We have to focus and play every match like a championship team."

Ker also cites the team's desire to win as a motivating factor in obtaining another crown. "We set a goal for ourselves to win another title," he added. "As a team we have to stay optimistic in the moment."

The Indians went into the match feeling optimistic, too.

"We appreciate playing against such a challenging team," said head coach Mary Krisan. "Today I told my team not to go into the match feeling defeated. Just to go out there and have fun.

"The main thing for us is having that camaraderie and working to improve our excitement and energy during each match." she said.
