SANTA CLARITA - A Canyon Country man charged in the alleged gang-related stabbing of a 20-year-old man four months ago has pleaded not guilty to felony attempted murder.

On Monday, Steven Markarian, 19, entered the not guilty plea Monday in San Fernando Superior Court, said District Attorney’s spokeswoman Shiara Dávila-Morales.

Last month Markarian was ordered to stand trial after just one day of evidence presented by prosecutors in a preliminary hearing.

He is scheduled to appear back in court Oct. 23 for a pre-trial hearing.

Markarian was arrested and charged with attempted murder in an attack on Aaron Matute. The stabbing occurred May 21 in the River Park Apartment complex in the 27000 block of Sara Street near Jakes Way in Canyon Country.

Investigators in the case say the attack was believed to be gang related.

Matute was stabbed in the abdomen and nearly killed in the attack. He underwent emergency surgery at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, where he remained for more than a month.

Markarian remains in custody with bail set at $1 million.
