When they formed a conga line for the song ‘We Are Family’ it became strikingly clear that family is what it’s all about at the annual LARC Ranch festivities.

Hundreds, many of them return guests, celebrated a sunny, breezy “Sunday in the Park” at the Los Angeles Residential Community ranch’s “Sunday in the Park” fundraiser on Bouquet Canyon Road, taking in lively music, tasty food and games.

“It’s a really good event and very family oriented,” said Christine Zazuetabrilll, whose aunt Kathy Sturkey serves as the ranch’s executive director.

On Sunday, her six-year-old son Connor waited patiently in line for a chance to knock down collapsible “clown” signs with bean bags.

“I want one of those little toys,” he said pointing to a table.

While waiting, his mother noted: “They do such a good job for the kids.”

More than half a dozen carnival games offering plush toy prizes were set up beside the big tent that housed the main stage.

This year, organizers went with a DJ as opposed to a live band.

Attendees relaxing in the shade of trees near the big stage were treated to some live music provided on a side stage by 13-year-old cellist Kristina Fleetwood, of Placerita Canyon Junior High School, a return visitor. “We know Kathy Sturkey,” she said, proudly.

Sturkey, herself, described this year’s event as “a relaxing, fun afternoon with friends and family,” with the proceeds benefiting LARC’s services for developmentally disabled adults.

“Each year, we strive to keep the ‘fun’ in fundraiser,” she said.

LARC was founded in 1959 by a group of parents who envisioned a better life for their developmentally disabled children. The 65-acre LARC Ranch provides homes, recreation and social activities, and day training activity centers for developmentally disabled adults.
