Santa Clarita Christian's Derek Lewis (39) drags a Sun Valley defender Rodolpho Molina (57) in to the end zone as Lewis stretches the ball for a score against Sun Valley at Canyon High on Saturday. SCCS won 56-7.

Behind a four-touchdown performance from running back Derek Lewis and a strong showing by its defense, the Santa Clarita Christian Cardinals defeated the Sun Valley Wildcats 56-7 Saturday at Harry Welch Stadium on the campus of Canyon High.

Carving and powering his way through the Sun Valley defense, Lewis finished the game with 142 yards rushing on 14 attempts.

Lewis’ scores were from 4, 14, 27 and 1 yard out

His first score gave the Cardinals an early 7-0 lead with 9:37 left in the first quarter, while his final touchdown came with 11:55 to play in the game and capped off the scoring for the night.

Kamron Carroll added two rushing touchdowns for the Cardinals as he took his only two carries of the night to the house.

Quarterback Jonathan Saavedra finished 12-for-15 for 191 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

His touchdown pass went to D.J. King for 49 yards, which prompted a 36-7 lead at halftime.

In total, SCCS tallied 388 yards of offense, while holding the opposition to just 63 yards.

Sun Valley was held to only six first downs in the game — three of which came by way of penalty.

The Cardinals recorded two sacks on the night.

Lewis had one and Shephard Smith had the other — his sixth sack of 2013.

With 4:57 to play in the second quarter, the game was delayed more than 30 minutes because of an injury to Wildcats quarterback and defensive back Angel Miramontes.

Ambulance and paramedics responded to the scene and transported Miramontes.
