The fourth annual Box City event to raise money for, and awareness about, the number of homeless families in the Santa Clarita Valley will return to Bridgeport Park in Valencia this weekend.

The fundraiser offers residents a chance to experience sleeping outside in a box for one night and invites participants to set a goal to raise $100 in pledges and contributions while doing so.

Billed as a chance to get a brief glimpse into what it’s like to be homeless, it begins at 3 p.m. Saturday and runs until 9 a.m. Sunday.

The Box City experience includes entertainment, such as games and bands, along with a contest to see who can decorate their box the best.

The event will be held rain or shine unless the weather poses a safety risk to participants.

Box City raises money for Family Promise of Santa Clarita Valley, a group that mobilizes community faith groups to assist homeless families.

The group is also part of the national organization by the same name and functions with the help of the Interfaith Hospitality Network.

The event typically raises between $20,000 and $30,000, event organizers told The Signal last year. An estimated crowd of more than 400 participated in last year’s Box City.

The experience is open to people of all ages, but those under the age of 18 need to be accompanied by a parent, guardian or chaperone.

Bridgeport Park is located at 23520 Bridgeport Lane in Valencia.
