SANTA CLARITA - A student at Valencia High School was treated by paramedics for cardiac arrest after apparently collapsing in the school gymnasium Wednesday afternoon, according to fire and law enforcement officials.

The call of a student suffering cardiac arrest was received by county firefighter-paramedics at 2:40 p.m. Wednesday, a Fire Department spokeswoman said.

Chest compressions were administered to the student until paramedics arrived, said Gail Pinsker, spokeswoman for William S. Hart Union High School District. The person who administered the chest compressions was not identified.

Sheriff’s deputies who responded to the scene said the student was breathing and was transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.

School officials said they would not release details of the incident.

“With an enrollment of nearly 23,000 students, we have numerous students with health issues and medical conditions that occasionally require emergency response,” Pinsker said.
