SANTA CLARITA - A car slammed into a power pole on Soledad Canyon Road near Saugus Speedway early Wednesday, shutting down the major east-west thoroughfare during morning rush hour.

The crash completely shut down the westbound lanes of the road just before 7 a.m., and eastbound traffic was narrowed to just one lane for a time, said Santa Clarita Valley sheriff’s Lt. Mark Hershey.

Lanes were reopened by 3 p.m., a sheriff’s deputy said.

The delay on opening the lanes was due largely to the sheared-off pole, which was hanging by its wires and threatening to crash to the road beneath it.

Southern California Edison workers rolled to the scene to repair the damage, but there was no significant power outage, said Edison spokeswoman Anna Frutos-Sanchez.

The driver of the car that crashed into the pole was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure, Hershey said.
