Two new physicians have joined the Santa Clarita Providence Medical Institute practice.

Internist Joy Bulger Beck, M.D., and Erik Bezema, M.D., a family medicine specialist, have joined Dr. Michael Pin, family medicine, who founded the practice 25 years ago. Both are board-certified.

Beck’s interests include women’s health, elder patient care and hypertension.

Bezema enjoys working as a family practitioner because of the variety of medical issues he helps manage.

Also, Providence Health & Services announced this week that it has reached a definitive agreement with SCL Health Systems, owner of Saint John’s Health Center, to “assume sponsorship” of the Santa Monica hospital.

The agreement is the result of months-long discussions between the two Catholic not-for-profit healthcare groups. Providence will assume oversight of clinical programs and day-to-day operations of Saint John’s.

The 70-year old medical facility has been in need of financial support and was put up for sale. Providence and four other Southern California hospital groups were seen as strong contenders to buy St. John’s, according to the L.A Times in a May report.

Los Angeles billionaire and major St. John’s donor, Patrick Soon-Shiong, and some hospital board members were also reportedly working on a deal to buy the hospital last year.

In the end, SCL Health engaged in exclusive talks with Providence because of its expertise in managing Catholic hospitals and its extensive physician network in Southern California, according to a press release issued by Providence.

The definitive agreement is subject to regulatory approval as well as review and approval by the California attorney general
