The boy was on foot and on his way to school around 7:25 a.m. when he was hit by a brown Chevrolet Avalanche driven by Gary Fortner at the intersection of Constitution Avenue and Pico Canyon Road, according to Officer John Lutz, spokesman for the California Highway Patrol's Newhall area station. Fortner was not arrested.
The boy reportedly suffered only moderate, non-life-threatening injuries including a head wound, and was airlifted with a parent to Children's Hospital in Los Angeles.
All parents of Rancho Pico students were notified by phone of the incident, said Pat Willett, spokeswoman for the William S. Hart Union High School District. She said counseling support was being offered to any students who may have witnessed the collision or who were affected by it.
